Dermal Fillers are a great solution to unwanted wrinkles. When injected, dermal fillers plump up the skin and smooth out folds and wrinkles. Whether you wish to concentrate on one area in a single treatment, or decide on a course of treatments for different areas, dermal fillers will help your skin to regain its youthful appearance.
Young skin is smooth and elastic and contains a lot of hyaluronic acid. As we grow older the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin begins to fall. As hyaluronic acid helps to bind water in the skin, the ability of the skin to hold water also declines. This means that the skin will become less able to restore itself after squeezing or indentation.
The loss of skin fullness also means that the skin becomes too 'loose', this leads to wrinkling of the skin, giving an appearance typical of old age. Put simply, dermal fillers are used to restore that lost volume in the face by plumping out lines, wrinkles and folds. The suppleness, elasticity and tone of the skin is naturally restored and this treatment provides immediately visible results. Some well-known brands of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers in the UK include Hydra Fill and Restylane.
Dermal fillers are supplied in a pre-filled sterile syringe for injection. They are manufactured in different thicknesses; some are more gel-like, and others are more liquid. The thicker ones are ideal for use in restoring the deeper folds or wrinkles such as those between the nose and corner of the mouth. The thinner ones are used more superficially for fine lines such as smile lines or crow’s feet.
Many thousands of dermal filler treatments have been carried out in the UK and even more around the world, with few serious or lasting side effects. Most people can return to their normal daily life immediately after the treatment. However, your practitioner will explain the possible side effects during the initial consultation.
All the dermal filler products we use are based on hyaluronic acid. It is derived from an animal-free source, so no allergy tests are required prior to treatment, ensuring your safety and convenience.

Lip augmentation
Lip augmention is the process by which the lips are enlarged and/or reshaped. Dermal fillers are also effective for increasing fullness to narrow lips and can even be used to raise the corners of the mouth.
How much do dermal fillers cost?
The administration of dermal fillers is a customized procedure that varies considerably from person to person. The cost depends on the number of tubes used. This can be discussed further with your treating surgeon.

The procedure
The procedure is relatively simple and safe, and will only take about 45 minutes of your time. Complete comfort can be maintained during treatment with special topical cream or a small amount of local anaesthetic.
The dermal filler is injected directly under the skin using an ultra-fine needle. The results can be seen immediately with very little ‘down time' or recovery time.
Overcompensation is expected in the first few days, since swelling will occur after the treatment. This is expected to disappear in less than a week’s time, giving you a fuller, more youthful glow. Dermal fillers are like erasing a few years worth of wrinkles and lines off your face! Minor modifications can be made at a review appointment at your convenience.
How long do Dermal Fillers last?
The dermal filler is gradually broken down and absorbed by the body, as the level of volume you gained lessens. You can choose to have the area 'topped-up' to retain the effect. However, if you decide not to, the advantage of non-permanent dermal fillers is that the area will gradually return to how it was before the treatment.
When used to treat lines or indentations around the eyes and other areas of the face, results are usually maintained for six to nine months. As lip augmentations contain a higher volume of filler, the effects of this procedure can last between 4-6 months.
Some patients maintain results for as long as one year, especially if combined with wrinkle smoothing treatments.
Who can benefit from Dermal Fillers?
Most men and women are able to have the treatment but your practitioner will ask you a number of questions to make sure you are suitable.
Contraindication
- Patients with infection at proposed injection site.
- Patients with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the product.
- Administration of Dermal Fillers is not recommended if you are pregnant or breast-feeding (until you have finished breast-feeding). This is simply a sensible precaution.
- Bleeding disorders or anticoagulant therapy.
- Patients who suffer from severe allergies, keloid scarring or have an auto immune disease.
- Patients with a history of anaphylaxis.
Precautions
If you have a history of cold sores, dermal filler treatment in that area might cause them to break out again. Your practitioner may prescribe a course of anti-viral tablets (e.g. acyclovir) immediately after the treatment and for a few days afterwards, to reduce the possibility of a recurrence.
Patients taking Aspirin and other NSAIDS, vitamin E and Ginko Biloba or St John's Wort should be aware that these can lead to an increased bleeding time and a greater chance of temporary bruising.
Dermal Fillers are safe, but there is a very small incidence of allergic reaction. This will be discussed with you in full at your consultation.
